Excellent read! These are two characters that I hope will be BIG for this author. This is the third book in the EK/JT series. This book takes a few steps back and goes into the paths that the two characters were taking independently, prior to their coming together.Very entertaining and a very good decision by this author. I feel that by going "back" in their story the author answers vital questions that the readers of this series had/have. I know I had questions. It just provides a little "fleshing-out" of the characters and provides more info into what makes these two tick.
So, if you're looking at this as a potential purchase, I definately recommend it. I don't even think you have to read the first two books in the series first, as this is the actual beginning. Yes, I'm sober! However, having read this first, I'm sure you'll want to read the other two! So, either way you do it, whether you make this the 3rd in the series, or the 1st, give them a chance. I highly recommend all three. This guy can definitely write!

I loved the first book enough to also get it on audio. The second was very good and I had hoped for more backstory in this one. There are some major questions still about Jacob that remain unanswered. I will get number four when it comes out. I am super tough to fool that's why I loved the first book so much. I tried not to solve this one but...
Kickstarter might be a better choice than the link you posted at the end of the story. I enjoy your books but that seemed tacky.
Minus the left leaning politics it could have been an average book. Unfortunately Travis’ most interesting character (Jacob Thorne) didnt have much of a part in this book.
I loved this book, which is a prequel & shows how Emma & Jacob started working with the FBI. Jacob's background with his dad & his dad's partner are featured & show us a lot about how the Jacob of today came to be. Gives us the info on Emma's background too. Realistic situations & well written characters move the story along quickly. It was one of those rare books where I kept checking how far along I was on my , because I didn't want it to end.
If you like a good crime novel, check out this whole series. You won't be sorry.
I liked it. I like the fact the characters are not perfect. I like the way the author gives you a lot of information but you are just as lost in the puzzles and surprised by turns of events as the characters themselves.
This, and his other novels, was hard to put down. It was a fast read. There wasnt any useless filler information and the story doesnt drag on unnecessarily, probably due as much to being a good writer as to being a self published author. His stories are very human, no events or actions that couldn't happen in everyday life. Im looking forward to more from this author and i would definitely recommend the series.
Another winner for Todd Travis! This book is made up of two separate prequel stories involving Kane and Thorne's earlier years before the actions of the previous two books happened. A combination of crime mysteries coupled with their own personalities made this a hard book to stop reading. Jacob Thorne is a 24 year old spending his time making money from playing chess with strangers at $10 a win when Kimberly Stevens approches him with an offer of finding his father, but they end up with the mystery of the disappearance of a bus load of kids and their driver. Emma Kane's story takes place after "the Van Incident" where she is sent to solve a multiple murder mystery. The stories remind me of Sherlock Holmes where the reader is presented with a set of crime facts that is a real puzzle. I would have to say that the author writes some of the toughest women personalities in literature that I've read which I really enjoy. If you haven't read the other two books "Creatures of Appetites" and "Trophies" I highly recommend them for twisted crime stories. Looking forward to book number 4!

This one starts with twenty four year old Jacob Thorne. The year is 1989. Jacob has been in and out of many of the finest colleges in America. He was accepted at both Yale and Harvard twice and didn't show up either time. College life wasn't for him so here he sits in Manhattans Washington Park making money playing chess. Anyone he beats has to pay him ten dollars. If he loses, he pays them the ten dollars. So far no one has beaten Jacob.
A woman approaches him. She says her name is Kimberly Stevens and she's been looking for him. Stevens is a consultant for the FBI. She and Jim Thorne are on the monster squad. A squad that hunts for serial killers. Kim wants Jacob to go with her to look for his father. A father who has been missing for a week.
Jacob isn't interested. Its been years since he spoke with his father. His father raised him after his mother died in a traffic accident. Jacob has been all over the US as his father went from one experiment to another. Jacob has a well rounded education in survival he also couldn't care less about his father.
Emma Kane is a DC cop. She was involved in a sting arrest that ended up with her killing the kidnappers. She's been on leave for a month and is shaky as hell. Her boss wants her to go to Roanoke, VA. to help with a murder.
Seems three people were killed in a safe room in a mansion. The doors were locked and there was no other way in or out. Her boss thinks this will be a good move for Emma to get out once again.
This is one hell of a mystery and Emma will be the one to solve it.
Jacob also will have one hell of a mystery to solve. A missing bus with eighteen kids and a bus driver.
All backstory for Emma Kane and Jacob Thorne. One hell of a read.
This one has Jacob, Emma, Stevens, Ty Trevor a Roanoke cop who's a big help to Emma, the Riastus redneck idiots, Holden a young man who's confined to a wheel chair, a young man who's the sole survivor of the safe room murders, Gail his medical assistant, Dr. Beard who ends up being murdered, Jacob and Stevens landing in the middle of the missing kids mystery, a bus that seems to have disappeared, a Jacob who figures it out, a Jacob who keeps his thoughts to himself, a Stevens and he who arrive in another state at the scene of a crash, a crash that claims the life of his father, a father who has been dead for a least a week, a Stevens who is far more than she appears to be, a Jacob who figures it all out, the FBI, the local cops and Emma Kane and Jacob Thorne becoming a team. A team that knows how to solve murders, destroy back guy and live to do it all again.
Five Stars and then some.
