Right Behind You (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa Gardner Luke Daniels Teri Schnaubelt Brilliance Audio Books

I read a lot of Lisa Gardner, and she is an excellent writer of thrillers. This one particularly caught my attention and held my interest. I am an adoptive parent of an older child with a difficult history, so this story of a sister and brother who went through the foster system after the murder of both their parents was of special interest to me. Not only do we get an exciting tale with lots of twists and turns as we hunt a killer, but we also learn about the emotional problems of children whose early childhoods were anything but pleasant. We also learn about the special skills needed by foster and adoptive parents to deal with the emotional issues of these difficult children. How to love, how to trust, how to show affection--all the basics they never got or which were violently taken away from them. I loved the story, the characters, and the police dogs, too! (They are certainly part of the emotional matrix.) Highly recommend this one as an exciting and touching read.

Right Behind You (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa Gardner Luke Daniels Teri Schnaubelt Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

For many years I have enjoyed Lisa Gardner's writing. Somehow this story just hit a home run for me. What a terrific story! It's a Quincy and Rainie story, however it can be easily read if the reader has not read the series. The main characters in the story are two teenagers who, believe me, seem to have lead their 9 lives already. Also a smart former police dog with a cop's name. (read the book)
So much has happened in these young people's lives, it almost seems impossible they are still thriving. You just have to read it to believe it, and there's not a dull moment to be found.
I was very excited when I found out that Lisa Gardner was finally going to right a novel with Quincy and Rainie again. If you agree then I must warn you to manage your expectations in advance. This novel is really about their foster daughter Sharlah. The Connors are there but really only as secondary characters. This novel is dark because all of Gardner's novels are but this one is not as dark and creepy as her other novels. If anything this novel is more sad when you see what the characters have been through. It might forever change how I view poor Clifford The Big Red Dog. This Gardner novel is not so much mystery or thriller but a drama as you see the plots unravel. It's not altogether a surprising whodunit. It was a quick read that I enjoyed but I know I would have enjoyed it more if I had known my own disclaimer above. I was expecting a different type of novel, certainly more of the Connors being more involved, so I was disappointed to find so little of them. There was also less of the profiling and action I have come to expect. I was happy that it was less creepy. This novel really is more about the characters than it is about any crime and it was done very well. There is no down time as the different threads come together and the reader realizes what is going on. If you've come across this novel without having read other Gardner novels involving the Connors this could be read as a stand alone and you will enjoy it, just know that the other novels involving Quincy and Rainie are much darker but very much worth reading in order.

My Thoughts The reader is led through Right Behind You You by a series of narrators, alternating between Rainie, Quincy, Shelly, and others…and in between those comes the italicized narrative of Telly Ray Nash.

We think we know what happened…and we are just wondering why it happened after all these years. And why would Telly kill the Duvalls, his very loving foster parents? What could have led him to kill apparent strangers in a gas station? Can a young man who has protected his sister morph into a mass killer? What do these killings tell us, and, if the killer is not Telly, then who? What secrets were Frank and Sandra Duvall keeping, and how does Sandra’s past figure into what is happening?

The characters felt real, with Quincy, a former FBI profiler, front and center in the search, and his wife Rainey, who was also involved, worked to keep Sharlah balanced as emotions ran high. Sheriff Shelly Atkins showed us that “small town sheriff” did not define her she had skills, and her ability to stay calm in the face of the intense actions made her a great part of the team.

The story kept me engaged throughout, although the numerous processes involved in tracking the killer became tedious after a while. But then I perked up as we began to realize that many things did not add up, and that now there were more questions than answers. As the clues led us to the final reveal, I was on the edge of my seat. Definitely 5 stars for me.
